Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
