Thousands devotees congregated on roadways from early morning, with disorder breaking out when massive group broke through a barrier at the city's central arena, causing armed forces to shoot skyward.

Crowds also occupied adjacent streets and attempted to breach the legislative building, where the authorities had initially planned the public viewing.

Though mainly known as an opposition figure, Odinga became prime minister in 2008 and also formed a political pact with the leader last year in a political journey marked by changing partnerships.
He commanded intense commitment among supporters, especially in his ethnic group based in western Kenya, many of whom believe he was prevented from obtaining the highest office by electoral fraud.
