Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
